Security
Ames uses industry-standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption
to safeguard your information, including credit card numbers,
during online transactions. To make purchase from the Ames
online stores, you must use an SSL-enabled browser, e.g. Internet
Explorer or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later. After the transaction,
to protect your information, Ames stores your information
on an off-line server securely stored behind a firewall. While
we take great security measures on Ames’ sites, we cannot
guarantee that total security is always possible on any site.
You play a valuable role in keeping your information secure.
Your password to access our web sites should never be shared
with anyone and should be changed frequently. After you have
finished using our site, you should log out and exit your
browser to prevent unauthorized users from returning to your
online account. For your protection, never send credit card
numbers or other sensitive information in an unencrypted email.
Note: The Fair Credit Billing Act states that most credit
card banks cannot hold you liable for more than $50 in unauthorized
or fraudulent charges provided you follow all rules and procedures
of your credit card provider.

Cookies
Like many web sites, Ames’ sites use “cookies”.
A cookie is a small encrypted data file that is automatically
stored on your computer, if it accepts cookies. A cookie assigns
a random, unique number to each user’s browser, which
allows us to hold items in your shopping cart and save your
password so you don’t have to reenter it each time you
visit the site. Cookies do not contain personal, sensitive
information, such as credit card numbers. Rather, cookies
help us track traffic patterns to better understand which
areas of our sites are most popular and to improve our sites
and your online experience.
